SWEPCO Brings Electrical Safety E-Learning Program to Students and Families

September 29, 2020

SHREVEPORT, La., Sept. 29, 2020 – Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), an American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) company, has partnered with The National Theatre for Children (NTC) to educate students and their families about electrical safety. The livestream program is available for grades K-5 in SWEPCO’s three-state service territory.

While SWEPCO and NTC have partnered to bring in-person theatrical performances into schools for many years, this fall the program has been adapted into an all-digital alternative as schools switch to a combination of classroom instruction and distance learning from home.

“Given the unpredictability of the current school year, e-learning programs that can be delivered remotely to teachers and students are an important way to reinforce the curriculum and form connections in this time of social distancing,” said Carey Sullivan, SWEPCO director of communications. “’The livestream event, called ‘The Safety Circus,’ allows SWEPCO to bring vital electrical safety information to schools and families.”

The program focuses on:

  • How electricity is made
  • The uses of electricity
  • Identifying dangerous electrical situations
  • Ways to stay safe around electricity

The livestream features a live host who introduces the program, sets up and recaps a series of four educational videos, and leads a Q&A in which students and teachers can submit questions for the host to answer live in real time. The four comedic, educational videos feature a variety of characters in humorous situations revolving around electricity.

The livestream events are supplemented by student playbooks (both print and online versions) as well as a full digital curriculum including games, activities, e-books, hands-on lessons, assessments for educators and smart speaker apps. SWEPCO sponsors every aspect of the program, making the livestream event and supplemental curriculum a cost-free addition to lessons in science, literacy and the arts.
