Bright Ideas for a Safe and Energy-Efficient Holiday Season

November 26, 2024

As the holiday season approaches, homes are aglow with festive lights and decorations, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. In the latest segment of Southwestern Electric Power Company’s “Ways to Save” video series, viewers are treated to expert advice on how to decorate safely while keeping energy costs low.

Every Tuesday, ArkLaTex residents can catch the program on KTBS, where they learn valuable tips, incentives, and programs aimed at reducing energy consumption and saving money. This week's segment features SWEPCO Energy Efficiency and Consumer Program Coordinator Leslie Williams and Safety and Health Coordinator Zebb Rogers, who share insights on the benefits of LED lighting and essential safety precautions for holiday decorating.

LED lights are a smart choice, consuming about 90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.

“For a typical holiday tree, it costs just about $1 per season to light it up with LED lights,” Williams explains.

Although the upfront costs may be higher, the energy savings typically balance out within the first year, making LEDs a wise investment for holiday cheer.

Beyond their energy efficiency, LED lights also enhance safety.

“They generate much less heat, which means they’re cool to the touch,” Williams adds. This feature significantly lowers the risk of fire hazards during a time when fire risks can escalate.

Rogers emphasizes the importance of safety, especially when decorating outdoors. “Always be mindful of overhead power lines while setting up your decorations. Make sure to keep a safe distance,” he advises.

KTBS' Jan Elkins talks to SWEPCO employees Leslie Williams and Zebb Rogers about tips to stay safe and save money while decorating for the holidays.

To further ensure a safe decorating experience, here are some additional holiday safety tips:

Watch for Overhead Power Lines:

Ensure Equipment is Free of Damage: Before hanging lights, check for any signs of damage, such as frayed wires or broken sockets, and discard any faulty items.

Only Use Equipment for Its Designed Usages: Ensure that all lights and extension cords are rated for the environment in which they will be used, whether indoors or outdoors.
