TEXARKANA, TX – A Texarkana-area program with a remarkably unique therapeutic approach to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with special needs has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the AEP Foundation at the request of SWEPCO (Southwestern Electric Power Company).
In their 20 years of operation, the Runnin’ WJ Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center has helped hundreds who are managing life with a host of physical, cognitive, or social challenges.
“We are very proud of the opportunity to assist families with this type of therapy who may not otherwise be able to afford the service,” said Jennifer Harland, longtime SWEPCO External Affairs Manager for the Texarkana region.
According to Runnin’ WJ Ranch Executive Director Brittany Rogers, this $25,000 grant will pay for 28 weeks of equine therapy for at least eight students.
Runnin’ WJ Ranch uses equine assisted therapy to help their clients of all ages with social and educational development. Rogers touted significant accomplishments by their clients through the years.
“We have seen students learn to talk, hold themselves up, and count among many other things,” all accomplishments Rogers said are major successes for their students and the program.
“To see the joy on the kids’ faces as they make connections with the horse and therapist is very touching,” Harland added.
