In a significant boost to robotics and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, the American Electric Power Foundation (AEP Foundation), at the recommendation of Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO), awarded a $9,000 grant to the Hope Public School District to provide hands-on learning opportunities for 5th – 8th grade students.
“We’re excited to announce this grant that will allow these students to delve into the exciting realms of robotics, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM),” said Jennifer Harland, SWEPCO External Affairs Manager.
Hands-on learning has long been recognized as an effective way to engage students in their educational journey. By actively participating in robotics and STEM activities, students not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also develop practical skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.
“By nurturing a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship, we’re hopeful this grant will encourage these scholars to be creative, to stretch their skills in science, math and technology, and to explore STEM careers and have the potential to shape the future of STEM industries including the future of energy,” Harland added.
Such interactive learning experiences foster a greater understanding of complex concepts and make them more memorable.
The program will engage students in math, science, and engineering activities tailored to their specific grade level and beyond. This strategic approach aims to cultivate academic and career pathways that align with the programs of study offered at the high school and local college/university.
By bridging the gap between theory and practice, these educational experiences will spark curiosity, inspire lifelong learning, and create a pathway for future success in STEM-based careers. The Hope Public School District is poised to cultivate a new generation of innovators and problem solvers.
