SWEPCO Continues Decades-Long Support with Contribution to the LaPREP Summer Program at LSUS

2024 LaPREP Program Summer Participants

The AEP Foundation, at the recommendation of SWEPCO, contributed $4,000 to support the Louisiana Preparatory Program (LaPREP) at LSU Shreveport. As the new school year begins, SWEPCO reflects on its continued commitment to this enriching summer program, which just completed its 31st annual session. Designed to prepare middle and high school students for careers in math, science, and engineering, LaPREP provides vital support for the underrepresented students in STEM fields.

This summer, 45 middle school students participated in the program, with 25 new participants and 20 returning for their second year. LaPREP’s curriculum focuses on enhancing students’ skills in abstract reasoning, problem solving, and technical writing, while offering them a glimpse into potential career paths.

A highlight of this year's program was the students' visit to SWEPCO’s Arsenal Hill Power Plant, where they gained a behind-the-scenes look at the world of energy production. "Hosting the LaPREP students at Arsenal Hill was a truly rewarding experience," said Tim Williams, Energy Production Supervisor Sr. at the power plant.

"Their curiosity and excitement were inspiring, and we’re proud that SWEPCO can contribute to their future success."

Over seven weeks, students were immersed in classes ranging from logic and algebraic structures to cybersecurity and python programming. They also had the opportunity to visit key local sites like the LSU Medical Center, Sci-Port, and Providence House, providing both educational and cultural enrichment. "SWEPCO's investment has been instrumental in LaPREP’s success,” said LaPREP Program Director Irina Ilioaea. “Their long-term commitment has made a lasting impact on countless students, and we look forward to continuing this important partnership."

Since its inception, LaPREP has served more than 925 students from the Shreveport/Bossier area, many of whom have gone on to pursue degrees and careers in STEM fields. “Supporting programs like LaPREP is at the heart of SWEPCO’s mission to foster the next generation of leaders in STEM,” said Michael Corbin, SWEPCO External Affairs Manager. “By investing in these students, we’re helping them unlock new opportunities and contributing to the strength of our local community.”
