Window stickers for EV and plug-in hybrids help you compare the fuel savings and lower cost of ownership for electric vehicles. If you're considering buying an electric vehicle (EV), you're probably looking forward to lower fuel costs. You'll never have to worry about the price of gas again! But will the savings make up for the higher price of an electric car? How do you compare the cost of owning a gas-powered car that gets 25 MPG with an EV using 0.25 kWh per mile?
Type of Vehicle. Stickers for all-electric cars and plug-in hybrids are slightly different, with hybrids displaying fuel economy ratings and ranges for both their electric and gas engines.
MPGe, or miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent, is the EV version of traditional gas mileage. MPGe measures how many miles an EV can travel using 33.7 kWh of electricity, which is the equivalent energy content of a gallon of gasoline.
Fuel Economy is the combined fuel rating, based on 55 percent city driving and 45 percent highway, displayed in MPGe. This is how far the EV can travel with the equivalent energy content as a gallon of gasoline. It can help you compare EV performance with a conventional car's gas mileage.
Fuel Consumption Rate shows how much electricity is consumed (in kWh) per 100 miles of driving. This can help you compare the efficiency of two electric vehicles.
Driving Range is how far the EV can drive on a fully charged battery. Plug-in hybrids add the range of their gas engines to this number.
Charge Time shows how long it takes to fully charge the battery using a 240-volt Level 2 charger. A Level 1 charger (using a standard household outlet) would take approximately three to four times as long.
Savings Comparison shows how much you can expect to save in fuel costs over five years, compared to the average new vehicle. It's based on driving 15,000 miles per year, using projections for the prices of gasoline and electricity.
Annual Fuel Cost is the estimated cost of fuel for one year, based on 15,000 miles driven, using projections for the prices of gasoline and electricity.
Greenhouse Gas Rating indicates the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from the car's tailpipe, from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).
Smog Rating indicates the amount of tailpipe emissions that cause smog and other local air pollution, from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).
Emissions shows the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by the car's tailpipe, measured in grams per mile.

The window stickers found in new cars, officially known as Motor Vehicle Fuel Economy Labels, are designed to give buyers a common point of reference. Labels for EV and plug-in hybrids include numbers you can compare to all the other cars on the dealer's lot. Here's what you need to know about reading the stickers and comparing the performance of electric vehicles.
