Is Appliance Recycling Worth the Effort?
When your appliance or electronic device has met the end of its useful life, don't throw it out. Recycle it!
Did you know that recycling an old fridge, for instance, keeps 85% of its mass out of landfills? Recyclable components include copper, aluminum, steel, glass and plastic. All are easily recycled.
More importantly, the parts that can't be recycled are an even better reason to keep your old fridge out of a landfill. Components such as chemical refrigerant, oil, mercury and foam insulation can cause serious harm to the environment if they wind up in a landfill.
When you dispose of an appliance properly, some of the mercury, refrigerant and oil can be recycled, or at the very least, disposed of properly. New technology even allows the foam to be turned into a fuel that can be safely burned.
If you're thinking about getting rid of an old appliance or electronic device contact SWEPCO. With SWEPCO’s appliance recycling program, we will pick up your old working fridge for free and give you a $25 incentive.
