SWEPCO is inviting student media teams across its three-state service territory to become community educators through a creative collaboration aimed at raising awareness about the Federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

This project provides students with the chance to gain real-world experience while helping their neighbors in need.

“We’re really excited about this to work with our local students, aspiring journalists and media teams and help them help our customers learn about LIHEAP and how to apply in their local communities,” said SWEPCO Corporate Communications Director, Amanda Keeney. “We know that across our three states, federal LIHEAP application deadlines may differ, and having that hyperlocal approach will be a great opportunity for the students to help make an impact.”

Students, under the supervision of their media teacher, are encouraged to create a 1-minute video that informs residents about how to apply for the federal LIHEAP assistance at the county or parish level. This project not only allows students to enhance their communication and production skills but also connects them with SWEPCO’s communications team for guidance and support.

Recently, media students from Nashville, Arkansas, embraced this opportunity and their work and experience was featured as part of SWEPCO's Ways to Save series on KTBS TV 3.

The Scrap Media Team, guided by their teacher, Carolanne Pinegar, took on the challenge from SWEPCO to equip residents of Howard County with essential information about winter heating assistance and the application process.

With the LIHEAP winter heating application window open until April 30, the students and their work played an important role in ensuring that income-qualified residents were informed and able to apply for the support they need.

Through this project, the Scrap Media Team created a helpful video in English and Spanish and gained valuable insights into corporate communications and the professional world. This hands-on experience allowed students to engage with SWEPCO representatives and conduct interviews, enhancing their understanding of business and community engagement.

SWEPCO has packaged the students' video and shared it with customers through a targeted email campaign, ensuring that important information about LIHEAP reaches those who need it most.

Educators interested in similar outreach projects are encouraged to contact SWEPCO’s corporate communications team.
