SHREVEPORT, La. — High temperatures and "feel-like" temps can push cooling systems into overdrive, leading to increased energy consumption and higher bills. However, there are simple steps customers can take to stay cool and save cash.
Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) recently kicked off its Ways to Save video series by helping customers beat the heat while saving on energy bills.
Each Tuesday morning, ArkLaTex residents can learn proven tips, incentives, and programs that can help them learn how to reduce energy consumption and save money on KTBS. The Aug. 6 segment features Lauren Dowden, a representative from SWEPCO, who provides general savings tips for those sweltering summer days.
Those tips include:
Set Thermostats Higher
One of the easiest ways to save is by adjusting your thermostat a few degrees higher, especially when you're not at home.
“If I’m on vacation, raising it up a few degrees helps my air conditioning unit from constantly running, which is saving me money in the long run,” Dowden said.
Cooling can account for a large portion of your home's summer energy use. By raising your thermostat by 5-8 degrees Fahrenheit when you're away, you could save up to $70 per year.
Avoid Using Heat-Producing Appliances
Dowden also recommends steering clear of using ovens or dryers during the hottest parts of the day. These appliances generate heat, making your air conditioner work harder to keep your home cool. In addition to that rule of thumb, it’s also good to upgrade to ENERGY STAR® labeled appliance. They use less energy and will help lower your electric bill.
Close Your Shades
Keep windows covered, particularly those facing south. Sunlight passing through windows heats your home and makes your air conditioner work harder. By keeping blinds or drapes closed on sunny days, you could save up to $45 per year.
Ceiling Fans
Ensure your ceiling fans are spinning counterclockwise to push cooler air down, enhancing your comfort without significantly increasing energy use.
High temperatures and increased air conditioning usage can result in higher energy bills. The greater the temperature difference between the outside and inside, the more your energy bill is likely to be impacted.
Unplug Appliances and Electronics
Use power strips to easily turn off electronics. Many devices can use power even when they're off. By plugging these into a power strip and turning it off when not in use, you could save up to $10 annually.
Schedule a Home Energy Assessment
Most homes and businesses have numerous opportunities to save energy and money. A certified energy expert can inspect your home for ways to save, potentially saving you up to $190 per year. Contact SWEPCO to schedule your home energy assessment and start saving today.
Smart Meters
If you don’t have one already, be on the lookout for your new smart meter! Many electric meters provide monthly total energy usage, but AMS (smart) meters capture data at 15-minute intervals, providing customers a much more detailed look at how they use energy. Customers can make more informed decisions about how and when to use energy in order to save energy and money. As SWEPCO implements new home energy management tools, customers will be able to access their information by smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Customers should have access to these tools approximately six weeks after the smart meter is installed.
