AEP Foundation Awards $50,000 Grant to Community Renewal International

February 28, 2024

The American Electric Power Foundation (AEP Foundation), at the recommendation of Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO), has awarded Community Renewal International (CRI) a $50,000 grant. The funding will support eleven Community Renewal Friendship Houses and their programs throughout Shreveport and Bossier communities.

Community Renewal International is a faith-based non-profit organization dedicated to fostering safe and caring communities by bringing neighbors and residents together. One of their core initiatives is the Community Renewal Friendship House, which serves as a hub for community activities and support services.

The Friendship Houses, located in low-income, high-crime neighborhoods, offer a wide range of programs, including after-school education, character building, service projects, GED courses, tutoring, computer training, art and music lessons, and family nights. These initiatives aim to empower residents and strengthen community bonds.

“We are excited about our continued partnership with SWEPCO,” said Jimmy Graves, CRI Director of Development. “The funding will enable us to further our mission of nurturing positive relationships within the communities and sustaining valuable programs at our Friendship Houses.”

Community Renewal International has been making a tangible impact in the Shreveport/Bossier area since 1994, with the support of local citizens and businesses. Over the years, the organization has established eleven Friendship Houses, leading to a significant decrease in major crimes by 55% in the neighborhoods where they are located.

"We are proud to continue our long partnership with Community Renewal International in their efforts to build resilient and thriving communities," said Michael Corbin, SWEPCO External Affairs manager in Shreveport. "This grant will build upon previous support to sustain the impactful work being done at the Friendship Houses, ultimately leading to safer and more vibrant neighborhoods."

The success of CRI's model has attracted attention from cities across the nation, with over 200 municipalities visiting Shreveport to learn from their community-building approach. The newly opened Friendship House, launched in September 2023, is a testament to the organization's commitment to revitalizing neighborhoods and fostering positive change.
