One day it’s freezing, the next day you’re debating breaking out the flip-flops. If weather across SWEPCO’s footprint can’t decide what season it is, how are you supposed to keep your home comfortable without sending your energy bill through the roof? SWEPCO’s Nick Mayfield, Consumer Programs Marketing Coordinator, has some expert tips to help you stay warm (or cool—depending on your mood to match the weather).
“Keeping your home energy efficient during these unpredictable temperature swings is all about preparation,” said Mayfield. “A few simple steps can make a big difference in keeping your home comfortable without wasting energy.”
First things first—look outside. If you have an HVAC system, make sure it’s clear of debris, including leaves and, on those rare occasions for SWEPCO’s southern territory, snow. Keeping your outdoor unit clear helps it run more efficiently, no matter what kind of weather decides to show up that day.
For those chilly mornings that turn into warm afternoons, having your furnace and ductwork inspected annually is key. Loose or broken ductwork can account for 15 to 35 percent of home energy loss year-round. Changing your furnace filter at least once a month can also make a big difference.
“A clogged filter makes your system work harder, wasting energy and money,” said Mayfield.
If your thermostat is working harder than a weather forecaster trying to predict next week’s temperatures, it might be time for an upgrade.
“Smart thermostats are a game changer,” said Mayfield. “They automatically adjust the temperature—keeping it cooler when you’re away or asleep and warming it up when you need it. That can add up to big savings.”
There are also simple ways to conserve energy without spending a dime on anything extra.
Running your ceiling fan clockwise in the winter helps push warm air back down, keeping your home comfortable without cranking up the heat. Another easy trick is using the sun to your advantage.
“Opening blinds on the south side of your home lets in natural heat during the day, and closing them at night helps trap the warmth,” Mayfield explained.
