Solar Calculator Helps Customers Determine If Solar is the Right Fit

August 28, 2024

Each Tuesday, ArkLaTex residents can learn proven tips, incentives, and programs that can help them learn how to reduce energy consumption and save money on KTBS.

In a recent episode of SWEPCO’s Ways to Save series, Alternative Energy Resource Manager, Jeff Thigpen shared important facts to keep in mind when determining if solar panels are the right fit for you and your family.

Many people ask the question, can solar panels lower or eliminate my electric bill?

In fact, there are many factors that determine if solar panels will make financial sense for a customer.

“The reality is solar can reduce the amount energy you purchase from SWEPCO, but if it saves you money is dependent on how much you pay for the system,” Thigpen said. “The systems are expensive and you’re still going to have an electric bill along with cost of the solar system you purchase. It’s important to do your research and crunch the numbers prior to making the investment.”

SWEPCO’s Solar Calculator can help you research your return on investment when you consider purchasing rooftop solar panels. WattPlan, an independent third-party tool, will provide a personalized assessment based on your actual energy use from the last 12 months. The assessment includes your potential solar savings, energy use, electricity rates and any available tax credits to help you determine if solar is the right fit for your family.

A few things to note:

  • SWEPCO is not in partnership with ANY solar installation company, nor does SWEPCO endorse one over another.
  • SWEPCO does not send anyone door to door to sell any product, including solar.
  • If the customer account for electricity is active, customers will continue to receive a bill from SWEPCO. SWEPCO will also continue to have a meter at the customer’s property.
  • It’s not true that purchasing a solar system will entirely eliminate an electricity bill.

  • Solar systems without battery back-up will not provide power during a grid power outage or at night.
